Building my first Tripod mountable DSLR Slider

I love to build stuff. So once I started getting more and more of an itch to have a slider, I thought to myself. “Why don’t I just build one?” Wanting to do it on a budget under $25, I went to home depot and picked up all the parts I needed.

Parts list for my 2′ slider

  • (2) 1/2″ X 2′ copper tubes $9.40
  • (4) 1/2″ Copper Couplings $3.24
  • (8)Washers(to raise the tubes) $1.10
  • (2) 2′ Oak Boards $9.94
  • (4)Washers(for bolts connecting tubes to board $0.51
  • Total $24.19

I accomplished my goal of building it for under $25…barely. Now remember, this price doesn’t include the price of a tripod. I already have the Travel friendly Manfrotto 7301YB so I didn’t have to worry about buying that.

I wanted the ease of having a release plate that I could bolt onto the bottom of the slider. This way I could quickly throw the slider on the tripod. To make this as friendly as possible, I wanted another tripod head to throw onto the slider that accepted the same Manfrotto quick release I already had (from buying aforementioned Manfrotto tripod). This way, I wouldn’t have to change out the plate from the camera. I could remove the camera, throw the slider on, then put the camera on the head mounted to the slider. Bam, bam, and bam.

I went ahead and purchased another Manfrotto 391RC 2 Junior head to stick on the slider. This is the current head that is on my tripod and whilst it’s not the greatest compared to a nice fluid head, it does the job!

The tripod head won’t be here until this Thursday, but that will give me time to give the slider a slick coat of paint and get ‘er all ready to go. Once everything is polished, painted, and finished up, I’ll do a more in-depth video along with some example footage.

For now, here’s a quicky I made after finishing the initial setup. I just set my T2i on the slider plate for the test shots since everything is not 100% put together yet.

    Sick day :(

Long story short, I went to sleep last night at around 8pm, woke up at about midnight, and was feeling absolutely horrid through the time I tried to get ready for work at about 8am. Feeling disgusting, I figured today would be a good work from home day. As I sit here tweaking away on some shots for work, I let Cyrus our dog outside and snapped a quick pic of him.

The reason I liked this so much is that it really expresses his personality. He’s upbeat, relaxed, and almost always happy. Besides being about 60lbs, he loves being my work-chair lapdog. Gotta love ‘em!

Testing the Magic Lantern HDR settings

I updated my Canon T2i last night from firmware version 1.0.8 to 1.0.9 and then to the newest Magic Lantern build. I played with a lot of the settings last night and I’m impressed! Unfortunately the camera froze a couple times after taking a photo, but I think I’ve resolved that issue with some setting tweaks.

One setting in particular had me itching to try it. There’s an HDR setting that allows the T2i to expand beyond the normal 3-bracket exposure compensation mode. It allows up to 9 brackets with user controllable stops between them! Now don’t get me wrong, 3 brackets is usually enough to get a decent HDR in most situations, so 9 is definitely overkill. There are some instances though where I think having more than 3 brackets could help out. Imagine a sunset/sunrise, or a scene where the highlights are completely blown in proportion to the darks. A 3-bracket might not give you the latitude you want from the image. A good number would probably be anywhere from 4-7 brackets to give you a great amount of data to play with.

I hopped over to the window during lunch and tried out a 9-bracket HDR for the first time. If there’s one thing I can’t stand and don’t like about the HDR image trend, it’s a large amount of halo around objects. I tried to minimize that best I could in the couple minutes I spent on this. Is it overdone? Probably, but it was still fun to make!

    Wish you were here!

I finally have finished rendering out the Bahamas HDR Time Lapse. Check it out and let me know what you think! It’s short but sweet. I wish two things would have happened.

    1. That I would have started it about an hour earlier…and
    2. That I would of done an aperture priority time lapse and let it continue past sunset

I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out so I did full manual. This also meant that as the light grew darker, so did the frame :( I still need to do A LOT more practice time lapses with HDR and aperture priority to make sure I can get a good day to night transition.

    Bahamas Resort HDR Time Lapse

I’m finally at the point where I can render out the Bahamas HDR Time Lapse. Fortunately I think it turned out great, which is good, being as I’m not in the Bahamas with all my camera gear all that often! I’ve done about 12 various time lapse videos, with about 3 of them being 3-bracket HDR’s. Everything to being on the back of a cruise ship and seeing us leave port (coming soon), to me mowing the yard. I’ve definitely learned A TON about exposure, aperture control, and how to reduce pop and flicker in regards to recording time lapses. The one thing that I wish I had that I don’t yet, would be an ND filter. This way, I could bring down the light a bit and allow for a slightly longer exposure. If it’s broad daylight out, you’re going to have to have a pretty fast shutter, which can lead to your time lapse videos being very crisp and jittery. If you’re going for that, it’s great! In most cases though, you want a nice, fluid lapse, with a hint of motion blur to the scene.

Here’s a quick preview of the upcoming Bahamas HDR Time Lapse!

    Shooting a bike is difficult

So my buddy and I went out for a ride the other day. Our main mission was to just have a fun ride, with the alternate mission of getting some good photos / video. I had lugged around my POV HD, my tripod, my T2i, and myself on the bike for about 6 hours. Unfortunately I forgot the remote to the POV HD so I didn’t feel like recording footage, and we were reluctant to find any great corners to get those sweet action shots of us on the bikes. We ended up finding this quaint little lake and set up for a quick shoot. It was then that I realized how surprisingly tricky it was to get a nice, clean, dynamic shot of a motorcycle. The thing I DIDN’T want to do was take a photo that a million and one people have seen before. I think I got some interesting shots and it was fun to set up and find the best angles for everything… some of them unconventional. By the way, the blue one is mine. :)

I’ve been doing quite a bit of time lapse shots lately and man is it fun! I usually dont mind the waiting either. Its a great time to sit quietly and just relax, which is hard to get in our 24/7 always on world. The more I practice, the more comfortable I’m getting with settings in regards to time lapse. Hopefully soon I can do some tutorials on the various settings, to help show what works and what doesn’t.

Here are some setups shots of me rockin some time lapse!

Reviving and refurbishing seanjoseph.com into seanography.net

Fact : I’ve been procrastinating on my personal website for too long. I’ve been so caught up in my other online site that I’ve sadly neglected this gem. While the regular www.seanjoseph.com site is up for now, I will be integrating everything into seanography.net . I am finally following my passion of photography as well as filming. All this new found knowledge is helping a lot in my day job as a visual effects artist for a prominent studio in the Midwest.

I am very much a current noobie when it comes to dslr cameras, so this will be an exciting new journey for me. I’ve already found a great community of great people offering a wealth of resources, knowledge and experience. I’ll definitely share what I’ve learned in hopes of helping others reach their goals!

    More Sketchings

So I’ve been trying to keep on top of making some new sketches. Even though I’ve only done 3 the last couple day, I can tell I’m already getting a lot more comfortable. The reason I’m doing this is why a lot of people do, to practice. I feel that in recent time my artistic talent has somewhat become rusted and faded, so this is my course of action to get that back and sharpen it. I’m all about character stuff, so at some point I want to take it all the way though. By that I mean I want to start with my own sketches, model it, sculpt it, UV it, texture it,rig it, animate it and render it. I want to get myself to the point where I’m easily comfortable with all of those steps, and make it look good. Here’s some other sketches I did the last couple nights. The orc is just a rough outline for shapes at this point, his anatomy is still a little funky so I still need to tweak that. If you’re not familiar with the design, it’s from World of Warcraft. Most of my stuff will probably be Blizzard related in one way or another, so for now my work is heavily influenced by WoW reference.

    Getting back to my roots

So it’s been a long time since I’ve actually sat down and just doodled. I think this has definitely been bad, so I’m going to try and rectify that. I plan on pumping out as much of this as I can so that I can hopefully get better. This was tonight’s first attempt at something. I did use reference but definitely changed some stuff. Babysteps…
